Product Description:

Water large lawns with less effort using the Orbit Traveling Tractor Water Sprinkler, a self-propelled irrigation solution designed to automate lawn watering. Instead of manually repositioning sprinklers throughout the yard, this traveling sprinkler follows a hose path across the lawn while delivering consistent water coverage as it moves.

Powered entirely by water pressure, the sprinkler functions like a small lawn tractor that slowly travels along the hose route. As water flows through the system, the internal gearing propels the unit forward while the spray arms distribute water across the surrounding turf. This allows homeowners to water large areas efficiently with minimal supervision.

The heavy-duty cast-iron body adds strength and stability for dependable outdoor performance. Its sturdy construction helps the sprinkler maintain consistent movement while standing up to frequent seasonal watering. The durable build also helps support reliable operation across a variety of lawn conditions.

Adjustable rotary spray arms allow users to customize the watering diameter from approximately 15 feet up to 55 feet. This flexible spray range makes it easy to tailor coverage for different lawn sizes or watering needs. The sprinkler also includes three selectable speed settings that allow users to control how quickly the unit travels across the yard.

For gardeners and homeowners who demand dependable outdoor care, Orbit brings industry-leading irrigation and watering solutions that simplify watering without compromising performance. With a focus on technology, durability, and real-world usability, our products make efficient water management effortless. Driven by innovation and shaped by decades of leadership in irrigation, Orbit helps landscapes flourish while giving users confidence in every watering decision.

Preventive Maintenance

Filter washer cleaning

Inspect the filter washer at the hose coupling before each use. Remove debris or sediment with a soft brush. A clean filter prevents weak spray and protects internal components from clogging.

Post-use drainage

After each watering session, stand the sprinkler upright on its end for at least 5 minutes to fully drain interior water. This prevents rust formation in the gearbox and extends component lifespan.

Avoid stress on the gearbox

Residential use (intermittent watering, standard water pressure 40–60 psi, hose lengths up to 200 feet) supports 6+ years of reliable operation. Daily continuous use, pressures above 80 psi, high-flow hoses, or exceeding 200 feet of hose length accelerate gearbox wear.

Lawn surface inspection

Before each use, check the path for bare spots, rocks, thick mud, or debris. The cast-iron body is designed for stability, but running over hard surfaces (concrete, gravel) or getting stuck in soft ground can damage the motor assembly. Use on grass only.

Troubleshooting

Sprinkler won't move (but spray arms spin and water flows)

Check arm positioning: Spray arms must point in opposite directions and be turned counter-clockwise (loosening direction) to engage the drive mechanism. If arms are aligned parallel or pointing in the same direction, the sprinkler will spray but not travel. Reposition arms so they angle away from each other, then test again.

Weak or uneven spray pattern

Likely cause: clogged nozzles or filter washer. Remove the nozzles from the spray arms and soak in a 1:1 vinegar and water solution for 30 minutes. Use a soft brush or toothpick to clear debris. Rinse thoroughly. Check the filter washer at the hose coupling and clean with a brush. Low water pressure or undersized hose (less than 5/8") can also reduce spray; verify your water supply pressure is at least 40 psi.

Leaking from bottom housing

Expected wear item. Minor seepage from the bottom housing is common after extended use (3–6+ years depending on frequency and pressure). If leaking is heavy or affects operation, the unit may be approaching end of service life. Contact Orbit customer service at 1-800-488-6156 to discuss replacement or repair options.

Gear noise or jerky movement

Potential gearbox wear. Unusual grinding, clicking, or uneven travel suggests internal gear wear, particularly if the unit is 4+ years old or has experienced heavy use. Drain the sprinkler fully and allow to rest for 24 hours, then test again. If noise persists, the gearbox may require service or replacement. Contact support for options.

Shut-off ramp doesn't stop the sprinkler

Check ramp placement: Ensure the ramp is flat against the hose and positioned so the sprinkler will fully contact it. The ramp should have at least 5 feet of straight hose on either side. If the ramp is too close to hose curves or kinks, the sprinkler may bypass it. Reposition the ramp and test with reduced pressure if needed.

Sprinkler travels beyond intended area

Likely cause: flimsy shut-off post. The plastic post may lift out of the ground, especially on soft soil or sloped terrain. Push the post firmly into the turf at a slight angle away from the hose path to increase grip. If the post is cracked or broken, replacement parts are available through Orbit customer service.

When to Contact Support

If troubleshooting steps don't resolve the issue, or if the sprinkler is within the 6-year warranty period and requires parts replacement, contact Orbit customer service using the chat icon in the bottom right of your screen.

Great Sprinklers and customer service.

I have 5 of the Sprinklers and they work great for my 2 acres property. I've had them for years. I just lay the hoses where I want to water and place the attachment on the hoses where I want the sprinkler to stop. Their customer service care about their customers and stand by their product. I did have an issue with one of them but customer service replaced it under their warranty.
I highly recommend the sprinklers. They are made of heavy metal so they are a bit heavy.

Great sprinkler

Great sprinkler. Never stops oscillating like the cheaper oscillating sprinklers.
