HOW TO MEASURE WATER FLOW



A bucket test is a quick and easy way to determin your water flow rate.  This can be performed in a matter of minutes and using items often availible around the the house.  All you'll need is a bucket and an outdoor, unregulated hose tap.  Make sure you know the size of the bucket in gallons. This information is necessary to begin the process of designing an underground sprinkler system.

Step 1

Place the bucket on level, solid ground underneith your hose tap.

Step 2


Turn on the faucet completely
Turn on the faucet completely
Open the faucet completely and time how long it takes to fill the bucket all the way.  This will be longer for larger buckets.

Step 3


Determine your flow rate
Determine your flow rate
Calculate the flow rate by taking the size of the bucket (in gallons) divided by the time (in seconds) it took to fill.  Multiply that number by 60.  The final number will be your homes unregulated flow rate in Gallons Per Minute.
