| Helpful Steps Before You Begin the Design Process | |
Take a few important measurements, outlined below, to ensure that your custom irrigation system will function properly. Have these results handy prior to starting the computer design program. |
1. Local Code Requirements: Contact your local water and building district offices to determine backflow prevention and permit requirements. |
2. Main Service Line Size: The main service line is the water pipe that runs from the water meter to the house. |
Wrap a piece of string around the outside of the pipe. Measure the length of the string required to encircle the pipe. Use the table in diagram 1 to convert the string length to pipe size. Record your main line size. |
3. Static Water Pressure: Attach a pressure gauge to an outside water faucet. Open the faucet completely and record the reading of the gauge. Important: No other water should be running when performing this test. Pressure gauges can be purchased or borrowed from you local hardware or home center. Record your water pressure. |
4. Flow Capacity: The flow test determines the gallons per minute (GPM) available to your sprinkler system. Take a bucket of known size (e.g., 5 gallons) to an outside faucet. Open the faucet completely and record how many seconds it takes to fill. Important: No other water should be running when performing this test. |
5. Yard Measurements: Measure and record the dimensions of your property perimeter, house, and additional landscape features to be included in your custom design. A measuring tape and an assistant make this process easier and more accurate. Record the measurements on scrap paper and keep it handy so you can refer to it during the design process. |
6. The Computer Design Process: Open the eDraw program and begin to make your dream landscape a reality. |
